Anglesey, 2006

MaenPiscar The weather was set fair and the tides were good so it was time to get the boats out again and get wet! Nine intrepid explorers plus one frustrated boat handler (a long story) met up at Trearddur Bay to take advantage of the excellent conditions that seem to be shaping up this year.

First dive was on Maen Piscar, a rock a mile out from Trearddur Bay, which would be dry at this state of the tide. Unfortunately, several fishermen had the same idea and we had to put the divers in a little way from the ideal location. Visibility was good (6-8m), making for an excellent dive with an abundance of dogfish, lobsters, crabs and an octopus. Nevertheless, one pair (who shall remain nameless) found their way back to the surface via one of the fishing boats’ anchor lines.

After a short stop back in the Bay for lunch and fills, we headed off to the Missouri for a second dive. Always a favourite in good conditions, the Missouri didn’t disappoint this time with visibility even better than Maen Piscar at around 8-10m. A thorough exploration of the wreck took place, to see if the winter storms had turned up any new sections. One group even managed to circumnavigate the whole wreck, including the stern section 100m away from the rest of the wreck.

In all, a good days diving and the conditions were excellent – hopefully pointing the way fro the rest of the diving season this year in North Wales.
